Grave Siesta is a sludge/doom metal band from Helsinki that was formed in 2010. The band’s harsh sound sets them apart as one of the heaviest acts in this year’s Skeneraator Festival.
Grave Siesta is one of those bands whose sound has changed quite considerably during the years. In the course of three albums, there have been significant changes to the overall tempo and to the style of singing. Recently they have developed a sludgier sound, though still built largely on stoner riffs. Sometimes they can be strikingly melodic. Their music is anything but stagnant. It shows that they dare to test different styles and combinations not just between albums, but also within them. The last album is especially noteworthy, as some songs remind slow doomy classics and others feature heavy death metal like vocals and even slow ballad like parts.
In 2011, the band released their first self-titled album. Grave Siesta is a slow stoner doom album that has been characterized as weaving together the best elements from bands like Saint Vitus and Reverend Bizarre with a little old school primitivism of Celtic Frost. Their second album Piss and Vinegar came out in 2015. Compared to their debut LP, Piss and Vinegar features growling vocals, more musical diversity and a slightly more rock ’n roll feel. Their third and latest album Voidward Spin (2019) is a complete step up in terms of tempo and sludge influence. This time pure vocals with slower riffs are more in the background and the overall mood is harsher and faster.
